Porsche 911 Speedster Makes an Unlikely Camper Hauler
Few would ever dream of towing a camper with a classic Porsche 911 Speedster, but then again, why not?
Car of Many Talents
The Porsche Speedster was a car born of a desire to create the ultimate open-air pleasure machine. But apparently, it's also quite adept at doing more than generating smiles. To 911 Speedster owner Volker Schiersch, at least, it also makes a pretty nice tow vehicle for his classic camper.

Looking Back
Schiersch’s love of all things Porsche is clearly evident in his passion for his car's mostly mechanical components. "It’s just the thing for old age," he explains. "We just grew up with these things at the time: double-clutching, adjusting the carburetor, welding the body yourself ready for the MOT."

Addicted to Speed(sters)
Schiersch is truly an air-cooled devotee, having owned everything from a Volkswagen to a 356 over the years. But his first Speedster, a '57 356, spawned an addiction that would last a lifetime.

Nearly Perfect
So when he had the opportunity to purchase this nearly perfect 911 Speedster a few years ago, he jumped at the chance. "The car was perfect, the Silver Metallic paint finish is not just timeless, but is much rarer than Guards Red, Black or Grand Prix White," Schiersch said.

Unique Experience
Despite owning several other exotic drop tops, he also prefers the Speedster's unique driving experience. "The most beautiful thing for me is still the noise of an air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine," Schiersch said. "Driving a Speedster is just pure pleasure. You have to stay alert when driving, and best of all I like the feeling of being part of what is going on."

Unconventional Choice
And yet, this Porsche fanatic is also the proud owner of a classic 1975 Hymer Eriba Puck camper. But instead of buying a truck to tow it around, he actually started with a Porsche 911 Targa he owned many years ago.

Real Deal
Now, he uses his Speedster for his many adventures in the wilderness. But this 911 doesn't just use some sort of aftermarket hitch to tow the camper around - it's actually fitted with a genuine Porsche piece.

Rare Opportunity
Luckily, there were a grand total of two G model retrofit kits available for purchase when Schiersch came up with the idea. So he was quick to jump on one of them and paint it Silver Metallic to match.

No Road Trips
This Speedster's days of long camping journeys appear to be over, however. “We no longer go on any extended trips with the trailer attached," Schiersch said. "We prefer to stay here on the North Sea coast and enjoy the peace and quiet.But of course we always take the Hymer when we visit our grandchildren in Düsseldorf and Osnabrück. The kids think it’s great when they are allowed to sleep outside in the caravan."

Classic Combo
Still, the fact that this classic duo is still around and kicking just brings a smile to your face. After all, when was the last time you saw a classic Porsche towing a classic camper down the road?
