Porsche 962 Will Let You Live Out Your IMSA Dreams

Rare Opportunity

For most, owning a Porsche racing machine is nothing more than a pipe dream. Mostly because, well, they aren't exactly readily available for sale. So we were obviously excited to come across this amazing Porsche 962 that's currently up for grabs at the appropriately named seller Fantasy Junction.

You Can't Beat the Feeling

Finished in Coca-Cola Yokohama Paradyne Dynamic black and red livery, this particular 962 was campaigned by driver Bob Akin in the IMSA series. It was actually his second 962 and featured an updated composite Chapman tub for safety.

First and Last

Interestingly, however, this was the very last IMSA car Akin campaigned, but also the first he didn't personally drive. Instead, he left those duties up to Hurley Haywood, James Weaver, and Vern Schuppan.

Trio of Races

962-C04 would go on to campaign in just three races in its short career. It finished 5th at Road America 500, 8th at Columbus, and then closed things out with an appearance at the Del Mar 2-hour, all in 1987.

Moving Around

After the '87 season came to an end, Akin retired and so did this 962. However, he kept it in his possession until 1991, when he sold it to the second owner. Since then, the car has changed hands a few times.

Holding Up

The third owner had the Porsche restored visually and mechanically in 2002, and the mechanicals was once again gone through in 2012. But all this time, the 962 has been kept in fantastic condition.

Semi-Retired

With a few hours and zero racing damage, this Porsche is also quite desirable. Despite that, it's seen action at Rennsport II and III in 2004 and 2007, the Rolex HSR Historic Endurance, and both the Classic Daytona 24 Hour and the Monterey Historics in 2014.

Running Gear

Today, the 962 runs on a Klaus Fischer 3.2-liter engine sporting air-to-air intercoolers, a Bosch Motronic 1.2 engine management system, new fuel cell, 8:37 ring and pinion, and transmission gearing set up for Daytona, Sebring, and Laguna Seca.

Gone Through

Everything else has been gone through and checked out, including the chassis, electrical system, and suspension. Today, this 962 is ready to enjoy out on the track or just in some lucky person's garage.

Drive It

Personally, we'd campaign this car whenever possible. Because despite its $1.2 million dollar price tag, that's what it was designed to do. Or, perhaps move to a place where it could be made road legal? Now that would be a real fantasy turned into reality!
