Repurposed Boxster

Many of us have been tempted by cheap Boxsters, as they're kind of everywhere on the used car market. Though they have their known (and pricey) potential issues, the older Boxster platform is undoubtedly fun. It was also the basis for Wesley Kagan's amazing, 1960s-style F1 car build that's been fully documented right here in the Rennlist forums.

True Inspiration

Kagan has always loved 1960s style Formula One cars, particularly Jim Clark's 1967 Lotus 49, which was designed by Colin Chapman. Of course, only those with incredible means can actually afford a real vintage F1 racer like this, so Kagan decided to improvise and build his own.

Suitable Donor

Thus, he hit the classifieds looking for the cheapest running Boxster he could find. After a while, he came across the perfect donor car, with a bargain-basement price tag of just $2,500. Soon, Kagan had it stripped down to just its mechanical parts, many of which would live on in this home built race car.

Power to Weight

Kagan then fabricated a completely new custom tube chassis to house the Porsche components, one that would go on to weigh a mere 1,100 pounds with everything installed. And with 300 or so horsepower on tap, it's undoubtedly a blast to drive.

Problem Solving

Obviously, this job wasn't as easy as it sounds. Kagan ran into all sorts of problems along the way, including a series of fitment issues. He also had to piece together a lot of other parts to make it all work, including things like a Jeep Wrangler throttle position sensor and a host of hand-built components including the shifter box and gauge cluster.

Nearly Finished

After 8 months and countless hours of work, the Boxster-powered F1 car was ready to roll. It isn't finished yet, but Kagan has had this amazing machine out on the road and at the track and is currently fine-tuning his work as we speak.

Trend Starter

Given the amount of skill it takes to build something like this, we aren't so sure if Kagan will ultimately start a trend of converting Boxsters into old school F1 replicas. But if we had the talent, we'd certainly be doing the same thing in our spare time.
