Project Gold

Project Gold is more than just a restored 993 generation 911 Turbo, it's a calling card for Porsche Classic, a division that specializes in turning vintage cars into vintage masterpieces. As you can see by the images in this slideshow, Project Gold features the same Golden Yellow Metallic outer shell that you can find on the 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. What's great about Porsche Classic is that they have access to a catalog of more than 6,500 parts for the 993, which means they can restore any 993 back to its original condition and even add some modern touches here an there. Construction of the unique vehicle took approximately one and a half years and it was assembled and tuned by Porsche Classic specialists at the Porsche restoration workshop in Stuttgart.

Porsche Classic's mission was not to produce a replica of the twenty-year-old car, but to show what they can accomplish when it comes to restoration and customization. If that was indeed their mission, then mission accomplished.

The Comprehensive Skill of Porsche

"Project Gold showcases the comprehensive skill of Porsche Classic in fascinating fashion," says Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. "This project clearly demonstrates our strategic approach. Although we are starting a new chapter in our sports car history with the Porsche Taycan, the story of how the company evolved is no less significant. On the contrary, this Golden Yellow 993 demonstrates how incredibly passionate we are about the tradition of our brand."

Nuts and Bolts

Every nut and bolt on this car is being produced as new from Porsche AG. All major mechanical components will come assembled as new to add to the allure. Turning the key on this car is more about going back to the future than buying a good used example. Even the “new car smell” will be original.

Making its Grand Entrance

This classic sports car celebrated its World Premiere at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca (USA) on September 27, 2018. The exterior and interior elements were created by the same Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur experts who were responsible for creating the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive series, which was limited to 500 units worldwide. The black wheels are highlighted by Golden Yellow design accents, while the seats and interior trim are finished in black with gold stitching and trim, gold lettering adorns the engine bay badges. The bodyshell features the characteristic side air intakes of the 993 Turbo S that were also available as an option for the regular 911 Turbo in 1998. A brand new 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine developing 450 hp was installed, delivering the performance the vehicle originally had when it was in production.

Next Stop, RM Sotheby’s

This collector’s item, which is limited to use on private tracks, will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta on October 27, 2018. The proceeds will be donated to the Ferry Porsche Foundation, a non-profit organization established this year to mark the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” celebrations. According to Porsche, every dollar this car fetches will go toward benefiting the lives of young people. It encompasses everything from educational programs to global projects that span across the world. Moral boxes checked.

Gold Bars

The paint might be called Golden Yellow Metallic, but when this car goes on auction it may as well be painted with the real thing. Prices of older 993 turbos already approach $200,000 to $300,000 depending on rare colors or low mileage. This car has both of those, plus the added exclusivity that drives P-car collectors wild. While the starting bid for Lot #220 is set is set at $174,546, you can expect that its final price will be two to three times higher than that.
