A History of Success

Porsche has had a long and proud history in motorsports, and rally racing has been no different. With a trophy cabinet that includes silverware that dates back 50 years, rally legends of Porsche sure have a thing or two to look back on with fondness. A collection of historic Porsche racers was gathered in Monte Carlo for a meeting of some of the most integral figures in Porsche's rally history and to celebrate 70 years of the brand's excellence.

Back in the Principality

This gathering saw legends of multiple different eras of Porsche's rally racing history come together in June of this year. Each of the five rally cars driven on the Monte Carlo rally track carries some historical significance, representing the past, and of course, the future of the brand.

2018 911 Carrera T - Vic Elford

Although Vic Elford did not have the car he recorded Porsche's first ever win at Monte Carlo in, he was presented with a 2018 911 Carrera T to drive down the canyon. The modern 911, however, was a stripped-down race car built to pay tribute to Elford's 1968 race winner. Elford described the Carrera T as "the best car I have ever driven in my life."

1965 911 2.0 Coupe - Herbert Linge

A part of the first ever Porsche team to participate in the Monte Carlo race back in 1965, Herbert Linge drove the 1965 911 2.0 Coupe. The Porsche came in eighth place overall in the race. The occasion marked the beginning of a new era for the manufacturer.

1974 911 3.0 Group 4 - Jaques Alméras

Famous hill climb racer and co-founder of the Alméras Porsche tuning shop, Jaques Alméras was behind the wheel of the 1974 911 3.0 Group 4 rally car. The Frenchman took the title of French mountain champion in the red and white 911 as a part of the GT Special class in '74.

1972 911 Carrera 2.7 RS - Rene Rochebrun

Although in his day Rene Rochebrun was the right-hand man for Jean-Jacques Santucci when they raced in the 1972 911 Carrera 2.7 RS. As a part of the gathering, he drove the same 911 that he was in the passenger seat of in 1978.

1978 911 SC Group 4 - Jean-Pierre Nicolas

And lastly, the beautiful blue and gold Group 4 1978 911 SC was driven by the same man who took the final win for Porsche at the Monte Carlo Rally. Jean-Pierre Nicolas drove his race winner on the day as a part of the salute to the glorious past and the celebration of the exciting future of the sports car company.
