Porsche/Star Wars Celebrate May the 4th

Star Wars fans across the globe have been celebrating May the 4th for years. And the popularity of the film series seemingly grows each year, taking May 4th from a cultural phenomenon, to what can surely be considered an international holiday. This soaring popularity has resulted in some cool brand ambassadorships and partnerships over the years. And perhaps none have been as cool as this collaboration between Lucasfilm and Porsche.

Collaborative Design Project

Ahead of the premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in late 2019, Porsche released images of the joint design project between the auto manufacturer's design team and the creative department at Lucasfilm. The project took about two months from the initial brief to arriving at the final look. And the collaborative effort does a fantastic job of representing Porsche's brand identity within the confines of the fictional universe.

Bringing Visual Styles Together

The automotive designers at Weissach, Germany-based Style Porsche would certainly have been happy to be able to explore their creativity way outside the limitations of a vehicle on four wheels. But there was a different kind of creative challenge here. The objective for both teams would have been to protect the authenticity of the Star Wars universe by ensuring that the spaceship fits the aesthetic guidelines of the film series. At the same time, they needed to make sure that the Porsche DNA is present and recognizable.

Hints of Porsche DNA

Named Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter, the starship features signature Star Wars vehicle design characteristics. It maintains a very tactical aesthetic while sprinkling in elements of modern Porsche styling. The tapering of the cabin back into the central volume of the ship resembles the iconic proportions of all Porsche vehicles. And small details can be found around the vessel that has clear ties to Porsche, such as the light bar at the rear, as well as the grid with the integrated third brake light.

We Want More!

Several other subtle similarities can be found all around the starship. And the overall look and feel of it present a strong, recognizable connection with the Porsche brand. Creative collaborations such as this are always exciting undertakings for the creators involved, as well as the audience.
