Catching Up

One of the biggest draws of the Porsche Taycan, when it launched, is its robust charging system and fast-charging capability, but in the real world, finding chargers that can take advantage of that isn't terribly easy. Regardless, Porsche recently updated the Taycan's onboard charger as its range and battery specs in general have lagged behind newer competitors in recent months.

Cut In Half

The update is centered around the Taycan's Level 2 charging capability, with a new onboard charger upgrade that effectively cuts charging times in half - from 9.5 hours to 4.8 hours for the smaller battery, and 10.5 hours to 5.3 hours for the larger unit present in performance models.

Speed Up

That may not be quite Level 3 speeds, but it's an impressive improvement, regardless. For those that charge at home, it's a huge boon, as they won't have to wait nearly as long to recharge the vehicle when it's near empty, though road trips could also potentially feature far shorter charging stops to boot.

Pay Up

As one might imagine, this isn't a free upgrade - Porsche is charging $1,850 for the new onboard charger, and at home, it must be paired with the company's Level 2 charger, which costs another $1,500. It's unclear at the moment what installation costs will be, however.

Popular Offering

Regardless, Level 2 charging is incredibly popular with EV owners thanks to its low cost and the fact that many people already have the ability to easily install chargers in their homes without making massive upgrades to their electrical system.

Worthwhile Investment

Thus, we imagine that plenty of existing Taycan owners will opt for this upgrade, particularly since it offers so much of an improvement for the money. Those that don't drive a lot won't benefit as much from it, but if you're a frequent long-distance traveler, it seems well worth the investment.
