Amazing Find

Sad as it may be, history usually gets the better of race cars. That's changed over time, as we tend to recognize the importance of these vehicles now more than we did decades ago. So it's pretty amazing that Porsche's first-ever Le Mans-winning 356/2-063 was discovered intact.

Interesting Discovery

We can thank a gentleman named Cameron Healey for discovering the car, which just looked like a regular old 356 at the time. When Healey purchased the car, it was red and missing the roof. All he knew at the time was that it was a very early car, and it had been owned by a man named Chuck Forge since 1957.

Familiar Sight

Healey had known about the car for years before Forge's passing in 2009. So he was quick to scoop it up. But little did he know the car's true history until he took it to renowned Porsche builder Rod Emory for a restoration.

Startling Discovery

As he began working on the car, Emory noticed many inconsistencies that suggested it was indeed car 063 that Porsche raced at Le Mans, securing its first class win in the process. And it was one of three cars the automaker exported to the U.S. after a complete makeover years later.

Change of Plans

Thus, plans for this 356 obviously changed quickly. Emory measures the other two existing 356 SLs with a laser, then created wooden molds and hammered out a new roof using tools from the 1940s.

Restore With Care

The restoration took some time, but Emory was obviously concerned with returning car 063 to a condition as original as possible. It isn't every day you come across a car so historically significant, of course.

Look Hard

A truly amazing story, and an even more amazing car. We're just happy that this Porsche is still around, unlike many old racers. But it just goes to show that you never know what you might find if you look hard enough!
