Porsche's new GT4 is the Grandest Cayman Yet

The promise of an undiluted driving experience is strong with the new Porsche Cayman GT4, which has a very special engine and only one gearbox option.

Porsche's in-house 911 rival

The drone view of this yellow Porsche reveal two distinct features: a fire extinguisher in the front passenger footwell and strut brace between the rear suspension towers. That last detail means it cannot be a rear-engined 911. But this is perhaps the biggest threat to the 911's kingship: Porsche's new Cayman GT4

Yellow GT4 seat badges have significance

What GT3 is to the 911, GT4 is to Porsche's mid-engine Cayman platform. The nameplate denotes the ultimate evolution of road-going Cayman. And for 2020, Porsche has thrilled the brand's faithful followers by reverting to a more traditional powerplant.

Brilliantly balanced mid-engined proportions

The 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 features some trick aero bits around the nose and behind the doors. Followers of the Porsche brand will also notice this car now has the company's latest LED lighting technology. For the rest, it remains a strikingly styled and excellently proportioned 718 platform car.

Aero that really works

This fixed rear spoiler adds 20lb of downforce at speed, but the overall aerodynamic numbers are a lot more impressive than that. The new Cayman GT4 generates 50% more gross downforce, thanks to a motorsport-inspired front-splitter, the fixed rear wing, and an aft diffuser.

An atmospheric flat-six

Framed in the 2020 GT4's rear diffuser are two substantial exhaust tips - and they symbolize something rather significant. Keeping true to the GT4 tradition, Porsche will only offer its ultimate Cayman with a naturally-aspirated flat-six engine. There is no turbocharged option. Powering the 2020 Cayman GT4 is an all-new 4-liter flat-six, which promises linear horsepower delivery like only an atmospheric engine can.

A high-revving Cayman

The Cayman GT4's new 4-liter fat-six powers up to 414hp, which is 34hp more than the previous iteration. What really intrigues about this engine is its 8000rpm engine-speed ceiling. Very few rival turbocharged engines can spin beyond 6800rpm, and the GT4's 8000rpm redline will be a hugely rewarding chase for enthusiast drivers, each time they change gears.

Like a track car inside - but with A/C

The GT4 cabin is kitted-out in fantastic lightweight semi-bucket seats. Those headrest cutouts show how serious Porsche was about saving weight with this car.

A 10/10ths driver's car

The GT4's performance is mega. There's a 188mph top speed and Porsche say the car's driving purity is unmatched. The only gearbox option is a six-speed manual, with no self-shifting PDK available. That means you'll have to work a bit harder - but also be rewarded with deeply immersive driving experience.

You can steer it with the rear

Riding 1.1-inches lower than other Cayman models, the GT4 can corner with greater confidence. Porsche has added a mechanical limited-slip differential to the car's rear axle, to ensure it retains grip and traction, even at extreme angles and with full power inputs. The 2020 Cayman GT4 is a true driver's car, for the committed owner. It could also be the best six-cylinder, mid-engine sports car ever made. Pricing for the Cayman GT4 is positioned at $100 450, with deliveries starting this spring.
