Rarified (Open) Air

When you think of Porsche Speedsters, you likely recall the iconic open-air 356s from the early days of Porsche. But the legendary automaker also reintroduced this unique look back in 1989 by producing just 823 examples of 911 Speedsters. And this amazing 252-mile example we spotted at Mecum Auctions might just be the nicest one in existence.

Tourist Delivery

Interestingly enough, Porsche earmarked these 832 cars for import to the U.S., making them a unique example of a car that sports European plates and tourist delivery.

Sleeker and Wider

The look of the 911 Speedster pays proper homage to the original, with its roadster body and raked, sloping windshield. But these cars also wore the wide fenders of the 930 Turbo and some fatter Fuchs wheel to fill them up.

Best of the Best

Aside from the obviously low miles, it's pretty clear that the previous owner(s) of this proper Porsche kept it stored inside and away from the elements. It's quite simply the best of the best.

Proper Power

Power for this open-top beauty comes from a 3.2-liter flat-six, which is backed up by the legendary G50 5-speed transmission. This particular car also packs a limited-slip rear differential for stronger launches.

Racing Brakes

The brakes on all 911 Speedsters proved to be a major upgrade on your typical 911 from this vintage, too. They consist of cross-drilled and vented rotors with multi-piston calipers, a system derived from the Porsche 917 racer.

Properly Documented

If you're looking for a properly documented example of a 911 Speedster, this one should fit the bill too. It comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, as well as the original owner's manual and keys.

Lofty Price

If there's a better example of a 911 Speedster out there in the world, we certainly haven't seen it. Regardless, this particular car failed to sell its first time around the block with a $250,000 high bid. So it'll be interesting to see how it fares the next time it goes up for sale!
