Porsche's Taycan will be the closest rival yet to Tesla's driver-focused electric cars. And the German brand appears to have overshot expectations.

No new Porsche has ever been this popular

Porsche has experienced huge demand for its new Taycan all-electric vehicle. The German brand initially targeted a debut year's production of only 20,000 units. But has already received no less than 30,000 pre-orders. A simple $2,785 deposit secures your place to own what will certainly be one of the most exciting status cars of 2020.

Focused on product and customers

The Taycan is off to a great start, for a vehicle that has not officially been launched yet. And Porsche is not becoming complacent either. It wants to treat its Taycan customers like gold, with incentive programs that subsidize three years of free recharging in select markets.

It will be a very potent Porsche

Although the Taycan is not going to be a light Porsche, it will deliver excellent driver appeal. Despite a curb weight of close to 5000 lbs, Porsche has tuned the chassis and all other mechanical components to deliver peak performance. Porsche has revealed that two versions of the Taycan will be offered, in escalating levels of potency.

Lots of places to leave your fingerprints

The Taycan will feature more information screen surfaces than any previous Porsche. There is a 16.8-inch curved display which runs atop the dash and all the display surfaces are designed to offer excellent contrast, even in backlit conditions.

Mostly modern, but some bits of tradition

The driver's information display is a delightfully curved screen, which still houses traditionally round dials - albeit digitized. Porsche does pay homage to its analog roots, with the Taycan's cabin clock, which remains a classic mechanical device.

An EV that will devour corners

It is electric. Looks modern and a has great cabin. But Taycan's driver appeal is what those 30,000 pre-order deposit holders have committed to. And here Porsche promises that it has engineered a vehicle that is every bit as capable as you would expect from the brand. Exhaustive testing at the Nurburgring has ensured that this Taycan will deliver a sterling drive.

Quickest around the ring

If you are one of the 30,000 Taycan deposit holders, there is no doubt that your Porsche battery-powered performance car will not disappoint. Rumored specifications indicate at least 600hp, with a most potent version peaking around 750 horsepower. Taycan has successfully lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 42 seconds, setting a new record for any four-door electric vehicle.
