Rendering Imagines an Older Cayenne With Classic Style

Porsche's Cayenne didn't arrive until 2003, but what if the automaker had started building it in 1995?

What If?

When the Porsche Cayenne arrived back in 2003, it was a bit controversial at the time. Regardless, there's no denying the fact that Porsche's SUV has been a success in the years since, as well as a big part of helping save the automaker from extinction. But we oftentimes wonder - what if Porsche had begun making the Cayenne sooner? Well, it might look something like this rendering created by an artist called The Sketch Monkey.

Big Improvement

This exercise uses the first-gen Cayenne as the basis for a new design, one that predates the 996-gen 911 by using the much-beloved 993 911 as a base. This makes a huge difference in the SUV's appearance, creating an instant classic that would've stood the test of time much better than the first-gen Cayenne has thus far.

Design Issues

Though we can appreciate the first-gen Cayenne, as Sketch Monkey points out, its overall design wasn't Porsche's best effort. Thus, he first dives into the original Cayenne design sketches to analyze what he thinks went wrong. He points out that he actually likes the front end, but feels like the rear end is where things went wrong, which is understandable for a sports car maker's first effort at an SUV.

Melting Pot

Those problems have been solved as the Cayenne has evolved over the years, and it's undoubtedly an attractive vehicle today. Thus, the idea of this exercise is to take the refined design of the new Cayenne and apply its concepts to the first-gen model, all while incorporating the design of the 993-gen 911. Sounds easy, no?

Perfect Match

The first step is to slap the front end of the 993 onto a newer Cayenne, and then smooth out all the lines so these two very different things line up. And the results, right off the bat, are very impressive. It almost looks like this front end was designed to go here in the first place.

Excellent Results

After going through the entire vehicle and blending it all together, The Sketch Monkey adds on a set of 993-gen Turbo wheels for the perfect look. We must admit, while many of these science projects end up looking awful, this one turned out pretty darn sweet.

Alternative History

It's fair to say that if Porsche had begun making the Cayenne just a generation sooner, it might be a coveted classic today, much like the 993 911 is. Alas, history just didn't pan out that way, but at least we can say that Porsche certainly figured out the SUV thing after a few years of refinement.
