4 Liter 4 Banger

While most 4-cylinder engines stay content with a displacement of 2.5 liters or less (think Subarus, Hondas, Toyotas, etc.) this RP968 goes big instead of going home. 4 liters mean each cylinder is over 1,000cc in displacement which is good for some serious muscle.

Power Levels

1,500 horses propel the custom carbon bodied race car to unbelievable speeds on any race track. It’s estimated that the car can produce over 3,000 horsepower in a drag racing configuration which I would suspect means dialing in more boost and running on methanol or another alcohol-based fuel source.

Fly Weight

Continuing with the theme of numbers, we have one of the most important figures: weight. With all of this horsepower and big cylinder bores, this engine must weigh a substantial amount. Not really, clocking in at 233 lbs, this boosted monster makes even a rotary engine look like a sledgehammer.

Big Reliability Bigger Price Tag

One of the staples of any great race car is longevity. You don’t want to be rebuilding something after every run if you can avoid it. Elmer Racing went to great lengths to ensure this with their 968 by using high-quality materials and intimate knowledge of engine tuning to create a bulletproof package. The total cost of the engine is over $136,000 USD.

More than a Fast Engine

Building an engine like this for Time Attack is a great way to showcase what any engine is capable of when the goal is to go as fast as possible. As major manufacturers step up to produce 4 figure horsepower cars, the aftermarket isn’t just keeping up, it’s actually outrunning them by a country mile. The RP968 is an example of how to build a proper racing engine where horsepower and weight come together in the ultimate performance package.
