Amazing Transformation

RUF is one of the older names in the Porsche tuning game, having first burst onto the scene with the now-legendary CTR Yellowbird. RUF is still around and doing quite well, and its many cool vehicles are a regular on the auction scene these days. That includes this amazing 2009 CTR3, which is up for grabs over at RM Sotheby's

Interesting Roots

The CTR3 is essentially what it looks like - a Cayman blessed with Carrera GT-inspired bodywork. But there's far more to it than that, of course. The car was actually developed in partnership with Multimatic, which is also responsible for producing the Ford GT racer, and rides on a stretched chassis that's longer than a 911.

Serious Power

That custom chassis was needed to accommodate the CTR3's rear mid-mounted 3.8-liter flat-six powerplant fitted with two KKK turbochargers. The output is an impressive 682 horsepower, which flows through a six-speed sequential transmission to the rear wheels.

Suspension Upgrades

The CTR3 rides on a custom RUF-tuned suspension with 997 911 MacPherson struts up front, a multi-link setup in the rear, and 380-millimeter carbon-ceramic disc brakes with aluminum calipers at all four corners, which bring the 3,000-pound Porsche to a halt in a hurry.

Sea of Red

The interior is plush enough to provide a nice compliment to the exotic-looking exterior as well. Carbon fiber seats are wrapped in diamond-stitched red leather, as is most everything else. Meanwhile, Stone Gray carpet and gray Alcantara trim help give the sea of red a little contrast.

Interesting History

This particular CTR3 also has quite an interesting history. It was ordered in May of 2007 by a collector in Southern California, but for whatever reason, didn't actually arrive in the U.S. until May 2010. It's been sparingly driven ever since, accumulating just under 1,700 miles.

Waiting for a Buyer

In total, just 31 RUF CTR3s were produced, making it a truly rare and special machine. Regardless, it didn't sell at auction the first go-round, with a high bid of $850,000. But we imagine that the right buyer will come along soon and bring home this incredibly unique and capable piece of RUF history.
