Daily Slideshow: RWB Goes Low-Key with This 964

Kris Duggan had the perfect 964 until an accident took it away momentarily. This 964 has a second lease on life, but don't call it a comeback.

A Vision in White

Kris Duggan is the owner of this dreamy white 1990 964 C2 911. He was lucky enough to have Nakai of RWB (RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF) grace the bodywork not once, but twice. Underneath the widened and lowered glossy white shell is the secret to Duggan's track day success.

The Backstory

Duggan is no stranger to the Porsche crest. This C2 marks Duggan's ninth Porsche and it was his pride and joy until an unfortunate accident with a California Highway Patrol vehicle damaged his prized possession. The CHP officer picked the worst time to rear-end Duggan as he had just picked up his finished RWB product after painstaking effort went into the bodywork of this 964. Nakai of the Japanse tuning company RWB made another trip to the States with the goal of (once again) making Duggan's C2 perfect.

Better Than Ever

If you're familiar with 911s (and if you're reading this you probably are) you're undoubtedly aware that the 911 is a rear-engined vehicle. What happens when you get rear-ended in a rear-engined car? Well you can imagine the damage caused by Duggan's run-in (pun intended) with the law and the complications which followed. Seeing this as a glass-half-full opportunity, Duggan transplanted a General Motors LS3 V8 to help this Phoenix rise from the ashes. The LS3 is good for 410 horsepower. In comparison, the 964's original motor made 250 crank horsepower when it was minty fresh.

Close Quarters

The LS3 is fit snug in the rear of the C2. Thanks to some clever plumbing and use of a 5-speed Porsche G50 transaxle, Duggan was able to make everything fit without any suspicions of an engine swap. The LS3 barely weighs more than the factory flat-six and when you think about it, there aren't a whole lot of problems and extra 150 horsepower can't fix.

Feed the Beast

One special touch which gives this C2 kudos in my book is the window-mounted air scoops feeding the swapped LS3. Credit to Trevor Yale Ryan of Speedhunters for getting this incredible shot capturing the RWB rear fender flares, the custom air scoops, and the ducktail spoiler all in one shot.

Track-Oriented Setup

Thanks to the widened RWB bodywork Duggan's C2 has reached new levels of grip. Tossing in KW suspension V1 coilovers and larger tires didn't hurt either. A KW Hydraulic Lift System brings the noise up when called upon, ensuring driveways, speed bumps, and curbing won't be an issue. An adjustable spring plate kit from Elephant Racing allows Duggan to get the stance he desires.

Sticky Feet

Duggan's C2 remains planted thanks to Toyo R888 tires sized at 315/30R18 in the rear and 265/35R18 in the front. To break up the conservative white and black color scheme of the C2, red AL13 wheels provide some contrast for the lower half of the car. Ducting keeps the big brake kit and RaceTech RS35 pads from overheating during track sessions.

Track-Focused Interior

One of my pet peeves is when a car is built to the max on the exterior and the finer points are neglected inside. Well, Duggan won't be receiving any demerits from me. The inside of his C2 is picture perfect in my not-so-humble opinion. Alcantara lines the dashboard and provides a silky contrast to the bright and clear white-faced analog gauges. A Momo steering wheel greets the driver once they're situated in the Sparco seats. Keeping Duggan in place on the track are harnesses mounted to the roll cage. Factory-style red seat belts are the more logical choice for day to day commuting. A digital temperature gauge provides a read-out just above the center console and a fire extinguisher is tucked away behind the seats should things go wrong at any time.

Taking Names All Over California

Duggan hasn't shied away from track days at some of California's best circuits. The driver's rear quarter window displays stickers from Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, and Buttonwillow Raceways. All the aforementioned upgrades and a big tank of courage resulted in a 1:44 lap time at Laguna Seca. Not bad for an almost 30-year-old Porsche. Of course, we know this C2 has a little more prowess than it leads on.
