914-6

Sitting at a traffic light a few weeks ago, a yellow 914-6 with no mufflers blew by me at wide open throttle. I jumped in my seat and then all the hair on my arm stood up. That was the moment it hit me that the 914-6 is one of the most overlooked Porsches in the world. Lightweight, simple and powerful are only a few ways to describe this awesome car. They’re old and no longer in the spotlight, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best cars money can buy!

944 (naturally aspirated)

The 944 without a turbo is never a car you hear people bragging about. If you mention buying one of these it’s common someone will throw in their $0.02 about why you should get the turbo version. There is nothing wrong with a naturally aspirated 944 as a car to drive around in, modify sparingly and have fun. They’re relatively lightweight and make for a fun base to build on should the need to upgrade arise.

912

You knew this was coming. Don’t act surprised. My introduction to these cars was during dinner when a friend and I were discussing everything in the world is more expensive. His reply to my 29-year-old comparison to the world in the 1960s? “Everything’s going up,” he said. “Even 912s and no one wants a 912.” I rest my case. Hey, it’s still a Porsche. Don’t knock it!

928 S4

Porsche doesn’t break from tradition too often, but when they do we get amazing cars like the 928 S4. These are one of the hidden wonders of the wide world of Porsche in that you never really hear about them from people who don’t know. Driving one of these is a glimpse into the range of engineering this company is capable of. Besides, who doesn’t love a V8 Porsche with tons of mid-range?

Boxster

Driven to the limit most people will get nauseous before admitting to how fast Boxsters can be. Regardless of what generation they are weapons in the right hands, as after all, they are still mid-engine. This inherent balance makes them a threat to cars 3 or 4 times the cost on any back road in the country. A few simple mods with the right driver and you might have a tough time running away from one of these in a GT3…

Final Thoughts

From the past to the present these are the Porsches that are most often overlooked by the average enthusiast. Some because they aren’t cool enough, and others because they just didn’t fit the mold. Whatever the reason, they have a place and a time where they are better than anything else. It’s all about driving as much as you can to understand how wide a variety Porsche offers. Hope you enjoyed.
