Just what is a 993 Speedster?

The label of 993 is Porsche's name for the Porsche 911 models produced and sold between the end of 1993 until early 1998.  The 993 was the 964's updated replacement.  When Porsche designed the 993, they redesigned nearly 80 percent of the vehicle's engine. During that run, a car known as the 993 Speedster was created as a one-off vehicle.

Who did they go to?

While never released for consumption to the public, the 993 Speedsters were built by the factory on the platform of the cabriolet with a sport-infused raked windshield. Other changes to the ultra limited cars were a lowered hood, a humped rear, and a reworked cabin. Porsche Exclusive was tasked with building a modern interpretation of what a 356 could be and crafted these cars accordingly. Of the two Speedsters there was one green car that went to Ferdinand Alexander for his 60th birthday and the other, a silver one, was bought by comedian Jerry Seinfeld in 1998.

The details of the two cars

The first car was a dark green Tiptronic S Speedster with 17-inch wheels that was built in 1995. The second one that was silver was built with a manual transmission and 18-inch wheels. Fun bit of trivia for all of you Porschephiles out there is that the car was originally a Cabriolet or Targa before being sent back to the factory. Once there, the Exclusive department went ahead and rebuilt the car as a wide-body Speedster.

That Speedster love

Since neither of the cars that Porsche built were official production models, many 993 owners took it upon themselves to lovingly build their own Speedsters for themselves. Take one look at this thread of 993 Speedsters and you'll know for sure how deep the appreciation for this super rare open-top car is.

Whatever makes your Porsche special to you

This video from Der Faszination shows just how excited the public is about this great variant car and how enthusiastic people get about custom Porsches. After all, wasn't it Ferdinand Porsche all those years ago who started his company because he couldn't find the sports car of his dreams?
