Spy Shots of the New 992 Carrera 4S on the Nürburgring
A mostly uncamouflaged 992 Carrera 4S took some hot laps around Germany's legendary ring recently, giving a pretty good idea of what it's going to look like.
1. 992 Continues the 911's Evolution
People love to joke about how the Porsche 911 has carried on with the same basic look for decades, and they'll undoubtedly mock the forthcoming 992, because it continues with the same evolutionary design process. But hey, if it ain't broke, why fix it? Porsche hasn't exactly been shy about testing the latest version of its most famous car, either. Recently a lightly camouflaged Carrera 4S took a few laps around Germany's most famous track and Automotive Mike got a pretty good look at it, as seen in this video.
2. Cosmetic Changes
From what we can see in the video, most of the cosmetic changes take place in the rear, namely the addition of the wide taillight strip that we first saw on the Mission E concept and the latest the Panamera. The rear spoiler design and headlights appear to be slightly different than the current model as well. But overall, no one will mistake this car for anything other than a 911.
3. What We Can't See
The biggest changes, however, are most likely what lies underneath that familiar external shape. The 992 is rumored to use a completely new modular platform, one that will see use in future Porsches and possibly even Audi products. That means it could also be capable of a mid-engine configuration, in addition to the traditional 911 rear-engine placement. Of course, in addition to a possible mid-engine 911 variant, it leaves open the possibility of a hybrid 911 sometime down the road too.
4. Drivetrain Changes
For now, however, the 911's powertrains look likely to follow the guide of the design updates; in other words, they won't change a whole lot. We will probably see small power increases over the current Carrera and Carrera S, which put out 370 and 420 hp respectively, but that power will most likely come from the same 3.0 liter, twin-turbo flat six cylinder used in the current model.
5. The Final Word - When?
Even though much of the 992 remains a mystery, we won't have to wait much longer to find out all the minute details regarding Porsche's latest. The newest iteration of the 911 should go on sale stateside sometime next year, and obviously, we can't wait.
