Kickstart My Heart

The Porsche 356 is literally what kickstarted the legendary automaker's existence, and it certainly found a niche with people seeking a pure sports car experience. And among the many 356 variants, this rare 1959 Porsche 356A Convertible D we spotted at Mecum Auctions certainly ranks right up there with the best of the best. A one-year-only model, the Convertible D was produced in scant numbers - 1,331, to be exact. It was also a spiritual successor to the A-series Speedster and a precursor to the B-series single-grille Roadster.

Exceptional Find

We'd certainly wager that few Convertible D examples still around today look as stunning as this Meissen Blue beauty. Everything, including the paint and trim, is in absolutely exceptional condition. Credit Porsche marque expert Jack Skaggs for that, as he was tasked with making this once downtrodden Porsche roadworthy again. Today, it retains its original engine, as well as all the correct bits and pieces that made it so special in the first place.

Meticulous Restoration

The Convertible D came about as Porsche wanted to build a more sophisticated version of its Speedster for 1959. Problem was, their normal coachbuilders Reutter and Karmann were already running at max capacity. Thus, Porsche turned to Drauz Karosserie for help. In turn, they upgraded the Speedster and its spartan nature with a taller windshield, glass side windows, coupe-style touring seats, and side pockets in the door panels.

Making Changes

The taller windshield also necessitated a revised soft top, roll-up windows, and larger rear window. An extra steel crossbow was added, and the car was fitted with rain gutters. Simple upgrades, but certainly noteworthy. The Speedster was rather spartan, what with its side curtains and racing seats. The Convertible D, on the other hand, was much comfier for long road trips.

Best of the Best

The matching-numbers, dual-carb 1600cc engine is still intact, along with the original 4-speed gearbox. And this particular Convertible D also comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. As far as 356s go, this gorgeous Convertible D certainly stands near the top of the hierarchy. Coupled with a killer color combination and unmatched detail, this example is certainly one of the best out there!
