Daily Slideshow: Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Days at the Track
It happens to the best of us. Whether you’ve lapped the track a million times or logged a hundred thousand miles in a car, sometimes it’s just not your day. Here are some drivers that had some close calls.
Jules Gounon’s Porsche Gets Excited
It’s not every day we see one Porsche try to jump on the others back for a ride down the race track. This peculiar incident is one that is likely to never be seen again. In a bizarre chain of events, one Porsche crashes into the other and somehow ends up on top. New fuel-saving strategy for Le Mans?
Walter Rohrl’s Tank Slapper
Walter Röhrl is a legend, but even rally legends and Porsche development drivers have misfortunate. While testing the 918 Röhrl has a pretty hairy moment that turns into a mega save before turning right back into a tank slapping Porsche ender. The impact looked minimal and Röhrl had to have been upset. Thankfully as part of his contract, he doesn’t get stuck with the bills.
Dukes of Hazard Hill Climber
This next guy gets away pretty clean where many lesser men have failed: recovering a tail-happy slide on a mountain road at speed. When traction breaks in a 911 you have to be on top of things quickly! At least the road was closed off!
Call 911
Or better yet your accountant. When the engine in this 996 GT3 caught on fire the excitement at this track day at SPA-Francorchamps certainly turned up a couple of notches. One of the worst parts of an engine fire is it isn’t much you can do. Even if you get the fire out promptly the chance you have a major underlying problem can be worrying. Fortunately, no one here was hurt!
Porsche Airplanes
Imagine driving down a straightaway at Road Atlanta and feeling like the front end of your racing car has gone light. “Oh, that’s a bit strange,” you think as you pile on the speed. And then, without any warning, you’re looking at the sky. “I don’t remember getting my pilots license,” you think as you tumble upside down to the alternating sight of sky and ground. It’s unbelievable to know the drivers of these cars walked away. Maybe when Porsches fly is a more accurate statement!
