The 5 Roads Not for the Faint of Heart
Which one of you would be crazy enough to send it down these roads if you were behind the wheel of a throwaway Porsche?
Jalalabad–Kabul Road, Afghanistan
The 50-mile stretch of road between Jalalabad and Kabul isn't just dangerous because it's located in Afghanistan, weaving through Taliban territory. The road is extremely narrow and full of blind turns and crests. The guardrails, which are supposed to keep you from careening off heights up to 2,000 feet below sea level, are made of crumbling concrete. The road has claimed so many lives over the years that people simply stopped keeping count.
North Yungas Road, Bolivia
You know that a road is dangerous when it's affectionately known by locals as the "Road of Death." In fact, North Yungas Road is widely considered to be the most dangerous in the world, with 200-300 deaths occurring each year along its winding path. Trucks and buses fall into the valley below on an almost daily basis while trying to pass each other on the narrow lanes. Thick fog, sudden rainstorms, and landslides are common along this 40-mile road to the rainforest.
Karakoram Highway, Pakistan
The Karakoram Highway connects China and Pakistan through the Karakoram mountains. It is the highest paved road in the world, spanning 15,396 feet. While the views from that height make the road a popular tourist attraction, it is also prone to flooding and landslides, making it extremely dangerous to traverse.
Skippers Canyon Road, New Zealand
Skippers Canyon Road in New Zealand is, quite literally, carved out in the middle of a cliff. It winds along with some seriously lofty mountain points and tends to get extremely slippery, especially in adverse weather conditions. The road is so dangerous that you can't simply drive down it - you must first obtain a special permit to do so. And if you do, forget about trying to pass another car if you happen upon one heading in the opposite direction.
Guoliang Tunnel Road, China
Guoliang Tunnel Road is an amazing sight to behold. Carved out of and through a mountain in China by a group of villagers, the road is the only connection the village of Guoliang has with the rest of civilization. Obviously, traffic isn't heavy along the road, but the unusual method of construction makes it very dangerous nonetheless.
