1. A great contender

With a month away from the season opener at the Six Hours of Silverstone, Porsche is now showing the world a more optimized racecar. This is all to forge on in the path of utilizing new tech along while retaining some tried and true aspects. Redesigned and ready for 2017, the 919 Hybrid will be a two-car and have a six-driver lineup that will debut on April 15th.

2. Drivetrain improvements

New tech has permeated almost every area including two energy recovery systems, a KERS-style unit mounted on the front axle and an exhaust recovery on the rear, that both flows to a brand spanking new lithium-ion battery.  However, some things are too good to tinker with and the car retains the same 2.0-liter V4 engine that it had previously. The entire system is on track to giving the 919 over 900 horsepower while operating in race trim.

3. Aerodynamic updates

Changes have also come in the area of aero as there are now new safety regulations from the FIA and AFO that Porsche has had to make in order to compete. These changes have resulted in reduced cornering speeds as well as a very different look of the car at the nose and the sidepods of the vehicle.

4. The same but different

All-in-all, 60-70% of the car is newly developed according to team principal Andreas Seidl. "The monocoque is unchanged since 2016, but the optimization potential of all other components was analyzed and, in most cases, adjustments made accordingly." This car that has been unveiled today is showing Porsche's low-downforce aero kit design, but has been mum on when the alternative high-downforce version will appear. LMP1 rules say that there can be only two aero kits per season which is a reduction from the prior three.

5. Ready to rumble

There will be two 919 Hybrids for the entire nine-round WEC season with World Champion Neel Jani, Andre Lotterer, and Nick Tandy as drivers. Seidl went on to confirm that for all of the changes that the car has made that the spec car still has amazingly not exceeded the weight of last year's car thanks to all of the optimizations that Porsche has made. Here is a great video to get you pumped up for the debut of the 919 Hybrid at the Six Hours of Silverstone.
