New GT3 Cup

Porsche's history in motorsports is very well-documented. And the legendary 911 nameplate has been at the forefront of the manufacturer's racing legacy. And as with the generations prior, the 992 Porsche 911 now has its own GT3 Cup race car. They recently unveiled the newest 911 racer, which will take part in a number of competitions across the globe.

Global Competition

The new 911 GT3 Cup car is designed to comply with the regulations of racing competitions such as the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and the Carrera Cups in various locations across Europe and Asia. And for the first time, the 911 Cup is set to debut in North America, as well.

Improved in Every Way

So how is this different from the previous generation? For starters, the 992 Cup's Turbo-spec widebody measures 1,902 mm, which is 28 mm wider than the 991. Additionally, the chassis of the new Cup car uses significantly less steel. Only 30% of the structure is made of steel, the Porsche engineers choosing to go with more Aluminum parts for weight saving. And let's not forget the swan-neck rear wing, which improves aerodynamic downforce significantly.

Less Weight, More Power

Other weight-saving measures include the use of carbon-fiber in the engine cover, the doors, and the rear wing. It makes sense for Porsche to employ lighter parts to bring the weight down, considering this is a larger car than the 991. To that end, the 992 GT3 Cup also gets a boost in power. The new race car has 510 horsepower, courtesy of the dry-sump 4.0-liter flat-6.

Meeting the Needs of the Driver

On the inside, the Porsche team has made several ergonomic improvements based on the feedback of drivers. There are two height settings for the seat, as well as multiple padding thickness options, providing optimal driving positions for all drivers. A number of user interaction elements have also been redesigned for better usability, including the steering wheel buttons, as well as the display monitor.

Ready For 2021

The driver can control the transfer of the 510 horses down to the wheels through a 6-speed sequential transmission. In consideration of the regulations of the various competitions, there will be three different exhaust system options for the Cup car. And the 992 racer will be ready to hit the ground running once the 2021 season kicks off.
