The boosted 968

It might only have four-cylinders, but the 968 was every bit a true Porsche. In the early 1990s, the front-engined Porsches were some of the finest driving machines around. With a great platform equipped with amazing suspension and steering, the 968 could always handle more power. And in 1993, Porsche obliged, by adding a lot of boost and power, to the 968.

The quicker Club Sport

With its large fixed rear wing, the 968 Turbo S meant business. It was an evolution of the regarded 968 Club Sport, one of the lightest and purest of all road-going Porsches at the time. The project was initiated back in 1993, with build responsibility given to Porsche's motorsport people at Weissach.

A blend of 968 and 944

Powering the 968 Turbo S, was a specially upgraded version of the 3-liter four-cylinder engine. It featured an 8-valve 944 Turbo S cylinder head, atop the 968 block. With carefully calibrated turbocharging, the 968 Turbo S boasted 305 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. Those outputs were significantly more than a stock naturally-aspirated 968 of the time, which was only good for 236 hp.

Shiny wheels for a special car

Distinguishing the Turbo S from other 968s of the time, were its wheels, supplied by Speedline. These alloy wheels featured three-piece construction to ensure they were as strong as they were light. This was one of the sharpest exterior styling clues to the Turbo S's potency. With a chrome-type surface finish, these wheels were typical of the early 1990s design aesthetic.

Simple and elegant

True to its Porsche Club Sport roots, the 968 Turbo S had a minimalist cabin architecture. The pride of place went to the racing-specification bucket seats, which had color-matching shell structures. It also had one of those oversized steering wheel bosses, typical of first-generation airbags.

More downforce on demand

One of the 968 Turbo S's tiniest, but most important details - is found at the rear. Porsche's motorsport engineers were aware that aerodynamics were part of harnessing the most balanced dynamic driving experience. The fixed rear wing pillar structure, allowed for a lot of actual aerofoil surface. The horizontal surface was adjustable, to increase downforce, thereby making the 968 Club Sport more stable at higher speeds.

A very potent four-cylinder Porsche

The 968 Turbo S had a special hood, with two inlet ducts to feed the turbocharger and provide a greater volume of cooling air. The performance was strong, especially for a car of the early 1990s, with only four-cylinders. It was capable of 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds and ran a top speed of 175mph which was remarkable for a four-cylinder car in 1993.

You'll be lucky to ever see one in person

Beyond its terrific performance and driving dynamics, what has made the 968 Turbo S so valued, over time, is its rarity. Porsche only built 14 of these four-cylinder lightweight sportscars. They were finished in either yellow or white and remain an ode to the fundamental design quality, of the brand's four-cylinder 968 sportscar platform.
