9,000 RPM of Fun

Porsche just announced the 2019 911 GT3 RS at the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland and there's great news for Porschefiles: the newest GT3 RS is Porsche's most powerful naturally-aspirated 911 ever. The geniuses in Stuttgart have squeezed an extra 20 horsepower and 7 lb-ft of torque out of the standard GT3's 4.0 liter flat-six engine. That brings total output up to a mightily impressive 520 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. The RS's heart differs from the standard GT3 thanks to plasma-coated cylinder liners, larger bearings for the crankshaft, larger connecting rod bearings, and updated, stronger valvetrain shims. The extra shove allows the rear-drive RS to launch from a dead stop and hit 60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds flat. That's a tenth quicker than the previous generation RS. The limited top speed of 193 miles per hour is very respectable when considering this a track-focused scalpel rather than a straightaway sledgehammer.

PDK or the Highway

Unlike the standard GT3, the RS is only available with Porsche's dual-clutch transmission. On the suspension side, the newest GT3 RS receives new helper springs in the front and rear as well as new balls joints. The rear-wheel steering system has also been improved and should make this iteration one of the best 911s to ever see a corner. The RS relies on 265/35 tires up front mounted on 20 x 9.5 inch forged wheels. Outback, 325/30 tires wrap around 21 x 12.5 inch forged alloys.

Refined Aero

The GT3 RS takes the aero and downforce capabilities of the standard GT3 to another level. A larger front spoiler, fixed rear wing, and rear diffuser produce twice as much downforce as the standard GT3. Helping with weight reduction is a carbon-fiber front trunk lid and rear fenders. The front trunk borrows the NACA ducts from the new GT2 RS which keep the brakes cool during track abuse. Porsche also shed weight thanks to a magnesium roof.

Less Will Cost You More

If you feel like your GT3 RS needs to be put on a more severe diet you can opt for the Weissach package. At $18,000 it isn't cheap, but if you're spending almost $200,000 for your track car what's an extra 18 grand? Coughing up the dough will trim your RS down an extra 13 pounds. Carbon fiber is the material of choice and replaces the standard magnesium roof. The front and rear anti-roll bars and coupling rods are also manufactured out of carbon fiber. On the interior, carbon fiber replaces the standard steering wheel trim and paddle shifters. Still, have a little money left in the bank? Think your RS is still too heavy? Reach deeper into your pockets, spend $13,000 for magnesium wheels and your RS will drop another 25 pounds.

When Can You Get One?

Porsche announced the GT3 RS will be coming stateside in fall of 2018. The base price? Hold your breath. A whopping $188,550 including destination. Given this is a Porsche, figure you'll chip in a few extra bucks for necessities like floor mats, mirrors, seat belts, and other custom touches. If you need to kill an hour or so at work, the GT3 RS's configurator is live on Porsche's website. Remember kids, daydreaming is free.
