The six-cylinder legend

Porsche racing cars are all iconic, but it is the 935 which has endeared itself to many and has a special place in the imagination of fans. Brought out to race in the 1977 season, it was a turning point for endurance racing in a very difficult decade marred by the oil crisis.

The legendary red, white and blue race car

Throughout the late 1970s, Porsche's 935 dominated. It became a crowd favorite, not merely because of its sheer performance and win rate, but also the striking race car's appearance. It was sleek and aerodynamic, but also attractive. And finished in that iconic Martini livery, it was always destined for classic status.

Those red wheels weren't a color statement

In showroom conditions, the 935's impeccable details can be poured over. Those red wheel covers were a brilliant way of reducing wheel wake turbulence at very high speeds. And these 935s were capable of up to 228mph, so aerodynamic stability was key.

How a livery can make you look even faster - standing still

Graphic design should not be a primary factor with any racing car, but with the 935, the livery worked so well with its overall shape. Those dominant red color, framed by blue, and the wave shape along its flanks, just blended so tidily with this racing car's proportions. It still looks like pure car art, even in 2019.

Decades on, people still love the 935

The Porsche 935 remains a hugely popular car when it is shown in public. Even at the Goodwood revival, where there are many legendary racing cars, crowds flock to see a 935 up close.

A car universally admired

Even those who never saw them race, are lured by the legendary status of Porsche's 935. Young drivers realize that this car, with its long tail and huge fixed spoiler, has a strong influence of the racing cars of today. Porsche was obsessed with aero and the 935 served as an experimental platform for many of the company's engineering intuition.

And it still runs, more than four decades later

And when it runs, you quickly realize why the 935 is so revered. Although it only has six-cylinders, the generous turbocharging ensures nearly 850hp in full race trim, on appropriate fuel. In the late 1970s, that was almost unbelievable and even today, it remains an intimidatingly powerful racing car. And a legend.
