Impressive Result

There's no denying the appeal of classic Porsche models like the 356. But as much as we love the automaker's original sports car, we were still blown away by the attention this particular model received at a recent Shannons auction. There, this heavily patina'd example raked in an incredible $230k when the dust settled, which is an impressive result given its condition.

Causing a Stir

The 1958 Porsche 356A Super 1600 Cabriolet is yet another example of how classic car values have soared during the pandemic as people have a bit more disposable income laying around. But we imagine that the seller isn't disappointed one bit by the stir his lot caused.

True Barn Find

This 356 is the very definition of a barn find, having been uncovered exactly as we see it today. That includes a heavy amount of surface rust, or patina as the cool kids like to call it, which has eaten away at the once pristine paint and exterior condition. Of course, some prefer their cars to look like this.

Long Wait

According to the seller, the car was owned by two different people before it wound up being stored underneath a Brisbane church in Newmarket back in 1995. It sat there for a number of years before it finally saw the light of day once again, and has now moved on to its new owner, who will hopefully at least get it running once again.

Rare Sight

The fact that this is a rather rare right-hand-drive 356 is what makes it extra special, as well as the fact that these cars were prohibitively expensive in England and Australia thanks to taxes and import duties. Regardless, it's estimated that this car would be worth $250k-$300k if restored, which makes doing so a losing proposition for the new owner.

Rare Options

This 356 does have bear some rare options, however. They include its Karmann hardtop, 1600 Super engine, and Rudge knock-off wheels. The powerplant alone makes it one of just 1,382 built this particular model year. Thus, we hope that this car is treated to the restoration it deserves, even if the owner will never recoup that investment.
