1. Journey Through Time

Porsche has been building sports cars for 70 years now. However, they've also been racing nearly since the beginning, using that extracurricular activity to build the finest road cars the world has ever seen. Although you certainly can't discount the many motorsports machines they've built over those years. Today, Porsche's racing cars have become every bit as iconic as their roadgoing brethren. But among those countless legendary race cars, these are the five most iconic.

2. Porsche 917 KH

You can't have a discussion about Porsche's finest racing machines without including the 917 KH. This is the first Porsche to claim overall victory at Le Mans, of course. With a flat-12, air-cooled engine, the 918 KH quickly established itself as one of the greatest racing machines of all time. It was incredibly lightweight, incredibly powerful, and amazingly stable. Which is everything you could ever want in a proper race car?

3. Porsche 962 C

The 962 C is an icon of the '80s, a car that used amazingly advanced aero, including underbody bits, to keep it glued to the ground. Massive vents by the doors sucked large amounts of air into the intercoolers, keeping the giant turbos cool. It was also quite the flamethrower, spitting hot fire out of its side pipes whenever the car would slow down to enter a corner.

4. Porsche 550 Spyder

Naturally, you can't have a discussion of the most iconic Porsche race cars without mentioning the car that truly kicked off Porsche motorsport - the 550 Spyder. The drop-dead gorgeous, aluminum-bodied, tube chassis racer took lightness to the next level and proved incredibly quick despite a tiny engine with a modest output. Nothing more than pure simplicity, which just flat out worked.

5. Porsche GT1 Coupe

During the early '90s, Porsche hadn't had a ton of success in regards to overall victories at Le Mans. So in 1995, they decided to head back to the drawing board and design something truly special. The result was the 911 GT1 Coupe, a long, low, and lean racing machine.

With superior aerodynamics, a monstrous twin-turbo motor, and a carbon fiber hull, this was a serious weapon for the track. And by 1998, Porsche had reclaimed victory at Le Mans, thanks to the GT1 Coupe.

6. Porsche 904 Carrera GTS

Porsche built 100 904 Carrera GTS models for the road, but that was only so they could meet homologation rules. This was a car that was all about racing, and it did a mighty fine job at that. It's a stunning car to look at, but one that also ushered in a new era of racing for Porsche. It was the first GTS Porsche and the first glass-fiber constructed car. It was both light and strong, and quite fast for its time.
