We Won't Get Another Hypercar Until Post 2025
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume was asked about the manufacturer's future hypercar plans after their annual results conference.
Long Time, No Hypercar
It's been quite a few years since the Porsche 918 was introduced to the world. And while it featured ground-breaking hybrid technology at the time, its performance numbers don't really hold up by today's standards anymore. Even higher trim levels of Porsche's own 911 can surpass the 918 Spyder in terms of performance around a race track.
No Hypercar in the Works
So it's understandable that we enthusiasts have been curious to find out if a successor to the 2013 hypercar is in the works. Unfortunately, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume put all speculation to rest when asked about the subject by the press. It looks like, at least for the medium-term future, Porsche is focusing the majority of its development efforts toward electrification.
Focusing on EV Development
The goal for the sports car manufacturer, as is with every other branch of the VW Group, is to invest in creating fully electric models, while also adding EV features to its current lineup. Blume didn't completely rule out the possibility of another hypercar in the future entirely. He seemed adamant, however, that any high-performance vehicle design will be secondary to battery development.
Racing Prototype
One glimmer of hope for a potential Porsche hypercar was the brand's new involvement in the LMDh endurance racing series from 2023. However, the regulations don't have any homologation requirements. And even if they did, the big issue would be transforming the powertrain (which was originally developed for a potential Formula 1 run) into a road-legal unit. A task that has proven to be more trouble than it's worth, judging by the Mercedes-AMG Project One's continued delays.
Absences of Hypercars
It's not exactly rare for Porsche to go long periods without developing any supercar- or hypercar-level vehicle. There was a whole decade between the Carrera GT and the 918. And the production of the 959 ended 20 years before the introduction of the Carrera GT.
Second Half of the Decade
So while Porsche might not have any immediate plans of a new hypercar, once EV technologies advance to the desired level, we can expect the next big thing from the sports car manufacturer. That will most likely be in the second half of the decade according to the Porsche CEO.
