Define GT3

Although the GT3 model designates an ultimate track version of a road car we should keep in mind that it is a track going version of a car that is predominantly designed to be a weekend toy for use on public roads. It is also designed to involve the driver in the process. Now that we have that established let’s look at the contenders.

The First One

Porsche debuted the new nomenclature on the 996 in 1999 which makes this car almost 20 years old. Prices still fetch over $100k which means it isn’t really a bargain compared to the new GT3s, but it is so much slower you can’t really compare speed, but that isn’t the whole equation. The 996 GT3 offers big thrills on a budget and anyone who says they need a newer version because this one “isn't as fast” is going to end up in a ditch for sure. An all-time great the 996 GT3 is modern old school at it’s best.

Middle Child

After the 996 left, the 997 appeared, and boy were these things fast. Manual transmissions were still a thing while the suspension geometry was updated to help cornering speed and track prowess. It gained a small amount of weight over the 996, but it makes up for it in spades everywhere else. This car bumps out the 996 in every possible way, but used models change hands for roughly the same amount of money. Not good for the 996 at all.

Mechanical Robot

If the 997 was a mechanical feast for the enthusiast then the 991 GT3 represents a deep dive into the world of ultimate lap time and track performance. Many enthusiasts were unhappy with the PDK only decision from Porsche which makes this car slightly less about the nut behind the wheel. Ownership starts around $175,000 which is substantially greater than the 997 and 996. So…what’s the verdict?

997 All Day

In the average enthusiast’s hands, the 997 GT3 is going to be just as fast as a 991 GT3 with a used price tag that saves upwards of $40,000 to $60,000 over a new version of the same DNA. It is more involving to drive due to having a manual transmission and is no less exhilarating than the latest and greatest. For this reason, the 997 GT3 is the best GT3 of them all.

Hope you enjoyed.
