Special Car

For some time, the 2016 Porsche 911 R was the hottest collectible on the planet, a car many believed would represent the last pure version of Porsche's iconic sports car ever produced. Thankfully, that wasn't the case, but this is still a special machine that garners a lot of attention every time one pops up for auction. and that's certainly true of this 243-mile example up for grabs at Shiftgate Auctions.

Cooling Off

With just 991 produced in total, the last 911 R is obviously a rare piece of machinery. Collectors responded by lining up for them in throes, and most have been kept stored away like some sort of valuable collectible, because, well, that's what it has been, though prices did cool off a bit after an initial frenzy.

Driving Machine

That's a shame, really, because like all 911s, Porsche built the R to be a fantastic driving machine. Basically just a GT3 RS without all of the wild bodywork, the R was exclusively fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, which at the time was rumored to be going the way of the dinosaur.

Weight Loss

The 911 R also came equipped with many nifty upgrades that weren't present on the GT3, however, including a carbon-fiber hood, front fenders, and engine lid, a magnesium roof, and an optional single-mass flywheel, all of which drove the car's weight down to a svelte 3,000 or so pounds.

Pinnacle Powertrain

Like a proper, pure 911, the R is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six that produces 500 horsepower and 338 pound-feet of torque and sounds fantastic at its 8,500 rpm redline. Paired wit the aforementioned manual gearbox, it's quite possibly the pinnacle of gas-powered vehicles, and that's saying a lot.

Flipping for Profit

Like most 911 Rs, this one is finished in the requisite white with green stripes, making it instantly recognizable to those in the know. These cars originally sold at a $185,950 MSRP, but routinely moved for $500k as flippers sought to make a quick buck. Of course, the very next year, Porsche rolled out the GT3 Touring Package, which offered much of the same equipment for less money, which cooled off the market a bit.

Moving Upward

Regardless, in today's market, the 911 R is once again moving upward in value, and this fine example has been bid up to $475k CAD, or around $375k USD as of this writing. And truthfully, we imagine that it will go quite a bit higher before the dust settles, as it should.
