Porsche 993: How to Clean Windshield

Even the most meticulous 993 owner may neglect to thoroughly clean the windshield on more than one occasion. However, the dirt and grime that builds up can make future cleanings more difficult, and can even scratch your windshield.

This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

If you've ever cleaned your car by yourself, you probably already have most of the required tools for this task. It's important to use the right type of cloth, preferably microfiber, to avoid scratching your car's windshield. You can also rely on a variety of windshield cleaners, but many owners have great success with RainX and Windex. Although you don't have to use detailer's clay, it's an ideal method for getting rid of more stubborn spots.

Materials Needed

  • Microfiber towels
  • Windshield cleaning product such as Windex or RainX
  • Clay bar (detailer's clay)
  • Razor (optional)
  • Protectant such as Windex (optional)

Step 1 – Prepare and wash the windshield

The first step is to lift your windshield wipers up so that you have full access to the windshield. Then clean the windshield as thoroughly as possible to remove any built up grime and dirt. For best results, start at the top corner of your windshield and work in small areas at a time. You'll want to use a specific windshield cleaner for this task.

Step 2 – Scrape off stubborn particles

If you've washed the windshield but are still finding stubborn particles and other bits, it may be time for a thorough scraping. This is where your clay bar will come in handy. You can also use a razor to scrape off the windshield. For the clay bar, you'll need to spray some glass cleaner along the surface of the windshield, then slide the clay bar along the surface to pick up any stubborn debris or particles.

Step 3 – Protect the windshield

Once all the grime is off your windshield, you'll probably want to protect it. Most products offer an extra shine as well as a protective coating that can repel bugs, dirt, and grime. Some products may even keep your windshield safe from small scratches caused by rocks and other debris. RainX is a trusted brand name among many car owners, but there are several similar products on the market.

To use the product, spray or rub it on then wipe the surface with a clean microfiber cloth.
