This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the computerized brain of the car that controls the functionality of some engine components. Within the engine, the ECU controls the air/fuel ratio, ignition and valve timing and control, and idle speed among others. Resetting your 993's ECU is useful in helping the car adapt to new modifications and gets rid of unwanted check engine light prompts. This article outlines the procedure to reset the ECU and details the skills needed, time taken, and costs of doing it yourself compared to going to the garage.

Materials Needed

  • Wrench 10 mm
  • Socket 10 mm
  • Pliers
  • Scotch-Brite pad or cleaning rag (optional)

Step 1 – Remove the negative battery terminal

After opening the hood, loosen the negative battery terminal using a socket extension and wrench, and then pull it out with pliers. Leave the terminal disconnected for 20 minutes. That duration enables the ECU to lose memory.

Pro Tip

While the terminal is disconnected, take the time to clean the terminals with a Scotch-Brite pad, or similar.

Step 2 – Reconnect the negative terminal

Reconnect the negative terminal and apply the right torque to tighten it (15 ft./lb.).

Step 3 – Insert the key into ignition

Insert the ignition key and wait for a few minutes.

Step 4 – Let the engine idle

Turn on the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Once the idle has stabilized, slowly drive the car around the block. Cycle all of the pertinent electrically controlled items (A/C, windows, etc.) to ensure that they are functioning correctly. If everything checks out, then you are done.
