Well Built

With EVs becoming more popular - and common - these days, it's not terribly surprising to see quite a few different types of vintage EV projects, with more than one electrified 911 and 914 build surfacing over the past few years. However, for those that would rather let a professional build something like that, a UK-based company called Electrogenic is churning out vintage EVs - including the Porsche 911 - that are extremely high-quality in every way.

Stirring the Pot

On the outside, one would be hard-pressed to tell that this is an EV, because, well, it looks like nothing more than a gorgeous, vintage 911 with signature design elements like Carrera script and Fuchs wheels. However, underneath its bonnet, one won't find any iteration of Porsche's legendary flat-six, but rather, something completely different that's going to be more than a little controversial.

Two Choices

Currently, Electrogenic offers EV conversions for 1974-1989 911s, as well as the 964 generation of 1989-1994. Buyers have two options in terms of powertrains - the E62, which consists of a 62 kWh battery and a 160 kW motor that makes 220 horsepower, or the E62s upgrade, which gives the 911 a 240 kW motor that generates 300 horsepower. Performance is solid, with the E62 doing 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, while the E62s can perform the same feat in 3.8 seconds.

Weekend Range

The beauty of this particular offering is that Electrogenic's EV conversion kits are true bolt-ins that don't require any sort of chassis modifications to make work, which means that they're also fairly easy to reverse if one decides to go back to ICE power. The range is fairly solid for a weekend cruiser as well, with a real-world result of around 180-200 miles on a single charge.

Proprietary Tech

Using its own components, Electrogenic is able to offer more of a boutique upgrade than other outfits that simply lean on off-the-shelf parts - such as those from Tesla - to electrify vintage 911s. Even the software utilized in these vehicles comes from the UK-based company, in fact.

Nicely Balanced

With a max charging speed of 50 kW, the 911 EV can be charged to 100 percent in roughly an hour via a fast charger, which is a pretty solid number, while a slower connection at home can still fill it back up in around 8 hours. The car weighs around 10 percent more following this conversion, but Electrogenic smartly packaged its components to give it a solid weight distribution of 49 percent up front and 51 percent in the rear.

Perfect Solution?

The cost for all this goodness is around $120,000 minus the donor car, which is obviously a lot of money. But this is a car that features some seriously fine craftsmanship and build quality, not to mention the fact that it was also designed to just be fun to drive. And for those that have embraced the EV era yet don't want to give up that simple joy, Electrogenic seems to have the perfect solution.
