It may not garner the same attention as a rare 911 variant, but this widebodied 924 is one cool Porsche nonetheless.

Rare and Interesting

We highlight all sorts of rare Porsches on a daily basis around here, but few like this one. We spotted this 1991 924 over at Bring a Trailer, but it's obviously much different than your average model of this vintage. But that's because it's a rather rare S4 factory widebody, and it was originally sold in Japan, which makes it even more interesting.

Crossing the Globe

Sold new in the land of the Rising Sun, this 924 is one of just 79 that came equipped with the those factory-fitted GTS rear fender flares. The Amethyst Metallic/Silk Grey Porsche was imported to Canada in 2011, at which time it received a major mechanical overhaul.

Interesting Options

The flared rear fenders and front wheel arches obviously make this Porsche unique, and the option is listed on the car's certificate of authenticity. Other options include the body-colored rear spoiler. But the exterior needs some work, as the paint is bubbling up in spots and the weatherstripping is looking a bit tired.

Well Traveled

The odometer currently reads a touch under 149k kilometers, or about 93k miles. The instrument cluster is surrounded by optional leather surfaces, along with a 340mm TechArt steering wheel with carbon fiber trim and red stitching and optional Silk Grey leather-to-sample upholstery. The original factory four-spoke wheel is included in the sale as well.

Top End Maintenance

Under the hood, you'll find the familiar 5.0-liter DOHC V8 driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. A slew of top-end maintenance has been performed by the previous owner, including polishing the cylinder heads and replacing the head gaskets, camshafts, timing gears, valves, and valve springs. The timing belt, tensioner, water pump, oil pump, A/C compressor, and front engine wiring harness have also been replaced.

Wheel Swap

The seller also installed a set of 18" Porsche 997 measuring 11" wide out back and 8" wide up front, all of which are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The seller has also rebuilt the steering rack and replaced the rear wheel bearings and front toe arms and links.

Worth Saving

This unique Porsche 924 S4 is obviously in need of some work, but it's also well worth the trouble. After all, it isn't every day you come across one of these rare rides. And even if it never reaches the lofty collectible status of its 911 brethren, we think that this cool old Porsche is well worth saving.
