New Acquisition

It's no secret that all-electric bicycles - or e-bikes, as they're commonly known - are hot commodities these days. We've already seen Harley-Davidson launch its own e-bike company dubbed Serial 1, while some other automakers have produced their electric bikes as well. Now, Porsche has acquired an entire e-bike company, Fazua, after it purchased a 20 percent stake in it back in February.

Joining Forces

Fazua was founded back in 2013 and has been producing lightweight e-bike motors and batteries for companies like Trek ever since. "This investment by Porsche fuels the ongoing acceleration of Fazua’s positive company development," said the company's CEO, Korbinian Lammel. "Together, we will put the pedal to the metal to advance our ‘better rides’ vision."

Other Moves

In the past, Porsche has also formed a collaboration with Ponooc, purchased a majority stake in Greyp, and launched two bikes built in conjunction with Rotwild, so it's clearly taken an interest in developing newer and better electric bicycles moving forward.

Next Generation

These moves likely signal that Porsche is working on its next-generation line of e-bikes, but it'll be interesting to see just what that lineup looks like. Porsche may expand its offerings to a full lineup, a la Serial 1, or it could perhaps spin-off that business into something totally unique as well.

Two Ventures

As part of purchasing all of Fazua, Porsche will form two joint ventures with Ponooc, a venture capital company that also happens to own several bike-related brands. The first will focus on the development, manufacturing, and distribution of e-bikes, while the second joint venture will focus on what is known as the "micro-mobility” market.

Red Hot Market

None of this really comes as a huge surprise, given how incredibly popular e-bikes have become. However, it is notable that Porsche continues to expand its own offerings in that particular market, as well as its own personal stake.
