Living the Dream

No matter what sort of vehicles you're into, many dream of installing a race car-derived powerplant in their road-going cars, a dream that isn't feasible nor practical, but glorious nonetheless. Regardless, someone got that chance recently when this amazing Porsche Formula 1 engine was up for auction at Collecting Cars.

Lofty Numbers

The Porsche-TAG TTE P01 Formula 1 powerplant was used in a McLaren MP4/2 way back in 1984 and is number 29 of 40 engines that were used in that capacity from 1984-1987. It was capable of cranking out an impressive 1,060 horsepower at a rather lofty 12,600 rpm, which are crazy numbers even by today's standards.

Winning History

The seller didn't disclose any specifics regarding which car(s) the engine might have been used in, nor what driver it was attached to. Regardless, this was a successful time for the McLaren racing team, which employed drivers like the legendary Niki Lauda and brought home driver titles in 1984-1986, as well as a constructor's championship in 1984-1985.

Whole Shebang

The 1.5-liter turbocharged V6 powerplant played a big role in that success, obviously, and is quite rare for the simple fact that it's a completely intact powerplant. We've seen bits and pieces pop up for sale here and there but rarely do we ever come across the whole shebang.

Prime Candidate

Indeed, everything here is original and complete, including the crank, pistons, con-rods, valves, camshafts, camshaft gears, inlet manifolds, and the KKK turbochargers. The seller notes that the block and heads remain in excellent condition, and there's enough here to easily rebuild the engine and use it once again.

Not Tame

Installing a former F1 powerplant in a road-going car would present quite a few challenges, starting with the fact that the high-strung motor isn't suitable for tame activities like driving to the grocery store in traffic. Regardless, that won't stop us from dreaming about the possibilities.

Hammer Falls

Interest in this vintage engine proved strong at auction, and when the hammer dropped, it ultimately sold for 32,500 pounds, or $42,428. It's unclear if the new owner will use it as a display piece or put it in some weekend racer, but it seems like a waste not to use this screaming V6 as originally intended.
