Porsche 928: How to Paint Your Rims Using Plasti-Dip

The Porsche 928 oozes class. But maintaining its class is costly, which is why a Plasti-Dip job on the rims can prolong the Porsche 928's allure as you save up to replace the rims.

This article applies to the Porsche 928 (1979-1995).

Applying Plasti-Dip on the rims of your Porsche 928 gives it a dark, sporty look. Besides the aesthetic reasons, Plasti-Dip renews the gloss of the old, faded Porsche 928 rims. The process of spraying the Plasti-Dip on is not complex, and with a little information you can do it yourself with great results. Also, if you get tired of it, you can always peel it off.

Materials Needed

  • Plasti-Dip
  • Cleaning brush
  • Newspapers
  • Masking tape
  • Car soap
  • Bucket of water

Step 1 – Clean wheels and rims

Without removing your Porsche 928 wheels, clean the rims with soap and water. Cleaning removes the dirt and road grime stuck on the wheels that inhibits the Plasti-Dip from sticking properly. Scrub the wheels and rims with the brush and rinse them with water. Alternatively, you can use Eagle One, Meguiar's, or Mother's wheel cleaners on rims. The former two have received good ratings on the Consumer Reports website.

Step 2 – Cover the calipers and rotors

Whether paint brushing or spray painting the rims, covering the calipers and rotors with newspaper or masking tape will prevent unwanted Plasti-Dip stains on these components.

Step 3 – Apply the foundation layer

Thinly spray the base/foundation layer on the rims. When applied, this layer helps the Plasti-Dip stick on the rims. While spraying on the base layer, do it evenly on every rim part by moving the spraying the can all around. Give the layer 10 to 15 minutes to dry before spraying subsequent layers on the rim.

Step 4 – Apply the Plasti-Dip layers

Spray on the the Plasti-Dip layer evenly. One way to ensure even application is to apply equal spray strokes on every part of the rim. Once the second layer application is done, give it 10 to 15 minutes for the layer to dry. Motoring experts advise applying up to four Plasti-Dip layers as they last longer (over a year). Once you apply the last layer, allow to dry for 30 minutes.

Step 5 – Remove the newspaper/tape and peel off excess Plasti-Dip

Remove the masking tape and newspapers from the rotors and calipers. Then, peel off any Plasti-Dip that may have stuck on the tires, calipers, or rotors (if any).
