Porsche 993: How to Install Radar Detector

Having a radar detector is helpful, but unless you want chords all over your dash, hard-wiring is your only option.

This article applies to the Porsche Carrera 993 (1993-1998).

Technology has come a long way in the last few years when it comes to radar detectors. Most devices offer better performance in smaller packaging, which means hard-wiring your radar detector into your car is a much better option than having chords all over the place. Not only will your radar turn on when you start your Porsche, but you'll be sure it's working every minute you are on the road. Keep in mind that radar detectors are illegal in some states, and the use of the level up technology, such as radar jammers, are illegal nationwide.

Materials Needed

  • Radar hardwire kit, or up to 20ft of 16 gauge wire
  • Wire cutting tool
  • Body trim removal tool (optional)

Step 1 – Mount radar

The radar must be mounted, but where you mount depends on your needs. Some Porsche owners prefer a discreet and concealed look, even if it's harder to glance at. Others prefer to mount it on the windshield, or up by the rear view mirror and have it completely visible, although it seems that your state's radar laws might influence those decisions. Wherever it is that you mount it, make sure it is secure and will not get in the way or fall while you are driving.

Step 2 – Install wiring

Because the fuse boxes in your Porsche are either through the firewall or in the trunk compartment, it is recommended to start with at least 20 feet of wire, and then trim as the install nears completion. Better to have extra at the end than to need more. Now that your radar is mounted, plug in the necessary power adapter or wiring to the back of it, run it through inside the roof and pillar paneling, and insert into the opening and grommet behind the radio into the trunk compartment.

Step 3 – Connect into fuse box

Now that the wiring has been channeled through the appropriate places, it's time to perform the electrical install to make sure your radar detector receives the necessary power. As far as choosing the right fuse to "hook" onto, choose something with constant power when the ignition is on. Good examples: cigarette lighter, heated seats, etc. Bad examples: radio, power seats. Follow these steps to install the wiring:

  • Choose appropriate fuse.
  • Remove fuse.
  • Using the pliers, grab the exposed end of the wire and attach it to the metal prong on the fuse.
  • Insert fuse back in its position.
  • Close fuse box.
  • Test radar detector.
