Are you ready to replace that old, boring, factory shift knob with something a little nicer to grab a hold of? While this is a simple and straightforward job on old cars, modern cars like the Porsche 997 require a little more effort. Thankfully, this is still an easy job if you know the tricks to getting it done properly. Keep reading as this article will show you how it is done.

Materials Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Remove shift boot

Grab the base of the shifter boot, and pull up from the back side. Then, pull forward to unhook the curved front tabs, which hold the boot assembly in place. Do not separate the boot from the shifter knob at this point because you might damage it. This is the trickiest part of the job by far, so take your time doing it.

Step 2 – Remove shift knob

Carefully lift the round shift diagram piece on top of the shifter knob to expose the two Phillips screws underneath. Remove the two screws. Peel back the rubber below the screws using a flat head screwdriver, and work the knob loose by moving it around as you pull it upwards. It is very tight, but you should eventually get it loose enough in order to slide it right off of the shift lever.

Pro Tip

Most Porsche OEM shift knobs are attached in this way. So if you are upgrading to another Porsche OEM shift knob, then installation is the reverse of removal.

  • Slide the knob into place.
  • Fasten the set screws.
  • Clip on the face plate of the knob.
  • Finally, reconnect the knob and boot to the base of the center stack.
