Pandemic Project

Safari Porsche 911 builds are all the rage these days and for good reason. These highly capable machines are every bit as cool to look at as they are to drive through the dirt, a fact that Johan de Bran is well aware of after building this gem of a Safari 911. Like many recent projects, this one started during the pandemic, which found de Bran sitting around with a lot of time on his hands, as he explained to South Africa's Cars.

Parts Problem

While Safari Porsches are a dime a dozen these days, de Bran wanted to do something a bit different. Thus, instead of opting for a 911 SC or a 964, he chose a 996 Carrera 4S as the basis for his off-road-focused build. Problem was, unlike those aforementioned older cars, there aren't a plethora of aftermarket Safari parts for the 996-gen 911.

Custom Bits

As any good hot rodder would do when faced with such a problem, de Bran simply designed all of that stuff himself, redoing the suspension and making some custom arms out of aluminum while sourcing custom shocks from Ryder to round out the package.

Homemade Goods

As for the bumpers, those units were reshaped using foam and hand-built steel inserts. The entire underside of the 911 is covered in a giant skid plate as well to protect it from off-road obstacles, while a series of additional lighting up front ensures that de Bran can see that stuff when he's driving around in low-light conditions.

Other Stuff

A set of OZ Racing wheels and an aftermarket exhaust are the only other real additions in terms of those types of upgrades, though there are plenty of other non-traditional Porsche parts like a Thule roof rack. Otherwise, the drivetrain is mostly stock, while the interior is quite tidy and luxurious for any off-road build.

Soaking It Up

As one might imagine, this simple but killer build is quite capable as a result, taking all the punishment the drive throw at it, cruising along at high speed around dirt corners. Even on the worst kind of surfaces, the 911 just soaks up the bumps and keeps moving along like you're driving on a smooth paved road.

One of a Kind

Watching this Porsche 996 911 Safari build cruise around in the dirt, it's easy to see why these kinds of builds have become so popular in recent years. Plus, de Bran can also enjoy the fact that he has a truly unique, hand-built machine that's unlike anything else out there, and that's always a good thing, too.
