Someday

It's been a while since the Porsche 918 Spyder graced this earth - roughly eight years, in fact, which means that it's reasonable to expect that the next great Porsche hypercar would arrive at some point in the near future. As it turns out, that seems to be the case, but it won't be happening any time in the near future, as CEO Oliver Blume recently revealed to Car Magazine.

Undecided

"The hypercar is always a part of Porsche’s strategy," Blume explained in a recent interview. "Porsche was always successful with this kind of hypercar showing what is possible, showing future technologies, cutting-edge products. "We will bring a hypercar when it’s time to bring it. So hypercars will play a role for Porsche in the future. But it isn’t decided yet."

Part of the Strategy

"We are concentrating on electromobility, we have so many products in the next few years and then we will leverage when will be the right moment to bring it – and when we want to show cutting-edge technology. But the hypercar is always a part of Porsche’s strategy," Blume added.

Making Sense

This wording is obviously quite vague, but it does clarify that we're probably not terribly close to seeing the next great Porsche hypercar debut. The automaker is a bit busy working on its future EV models, of course, and it's also dealing with a myriad number of supply chain issues, so this makes some sense on the surface.

Electrified Performance?

Previously expected sometime around 2025, this likely means that we won't see a new Porsche hypercar until closer to the end of this decade, a notion that Blume also somewhat confirmed, while also hinting that this particular range-topping model may also be fully electric.

Possibilities

"The battery will be the 'cylinder' of tomorrow, so we still have to investigate high-power, high-density cells," Blume said. "We will invest in these cells, and when we have the right cell for a high-power car, then will come the point, but I don’t think about this car before the second half of the decade. Before 2025, we won’t have a hypercar. Later on, it might be possible."

Exercise in Patience

The 918 Spyder came along a full decade after the Carrera GT, so this kind of wait certainly isn't unprecedented, but it's still agonizing for we enthusiasts who have long clamored for the next great, world-beating Porsche hypercar. Regardless, it seems as if we'll just have to continue to exercise patience as we await its impending arrival.
