Hero Car

Those that were around in the early 1980s undoubtedly remember the movie Risky Business, a coming-of-age sort of flick starring Tom Cruise that wound up becoming a massive box office success. The real star of the movie, however, was the Porsche 928 owned by Cruise's character's father. Now, the pristine hero car from the movie is going up for grabs at Barrett-Jackson's upcoming Houston auction.

Perfect Choice

The director of the film, Paul Brickman, specifically chose the 928 over the 911, which he interestingly considered to be "too mundane." To him, the 928 was more of a quintessential car for a successful big city businessman at the time, as well as the perfect vehicle for a fun-seeking teen to get in trouble while driving.

Prominently Featured

Several 928s were used in the filming of Risky Business, but this is the hero car or the one that wasn't abused. It received the bulk of the screen time, and was one of three cars driven on set, as well as one of two featured in the film's signature chase scene. Thankfully, it wasn't the 928 driven into Lake Michigan, however.

Famous Ride

This Porsche 928 is famous for a few reasons other than starring in a popular movie, too. It was featured in the documentary The Quest for the RB928 (Risky Business 928), in which filmmaker Lewis Johnsen chronicles his journey to track the car down. On top of that, this 928 was also famously the one that Tom Cruise learned how to drive a stick shift in.

Making the Rounds

This 928 returned to California after its film appearance, where it was later found by Johnsen. Originally painted white but repainted gold and then white again, the car has been well-cared for and stored in a climate-controlled building amid a private collection for years. It's been on a whirlwind tour as well, making appearances at a number of events and places in recent years, including Porsche Cars North America and the Petersen Automotive Museum's Porsche Effect Exhibit.
