Pushed Back

The fact that a Porsche Macan EV is in the works has been one of the worst kept secrets in the automotive world over the past couple of years. However, the all-electric crossover was slated to arrive for the 2023 model year, which means that being in the fourth-quarter of the year, we would have likely seen this new model by now. There's a reason why we haven't - according to Forbes, as the Macan EV has reportedly been delayed to at least 2024, and perhaps later.

Bugs to Work Out

The problem, it seems, isn't related to the various supply chain issues that are plaguing automakers at the moment, but rather, some challenges finishing the EV's software and ironing out its bugs. It is worth noting that the Macan EV will be the first product to ride on the brand new Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which likely played a part in this issue.

Big Improvements

Macan EV development has been ongoing for some time now, however, and Porsche began testing prototypes last year. The Macan EV is expected to offer more range than existing all-electric crossovers thanks to its advanced battery and platform tech, and will also utilize an 800-volt electrical architecture.

Few Complications

Audi and Porsche have been working together to develop the PPE platform for some time now, but the hold up apparently stems from the E3 1.2 software platform that it's currently utilizing. Developed by VW spin-off, Cariad, there are some complications that have arose while developing that software alongside the new E3 2.0 setup.

Other Impacted Models

Problem is, this delay will also likely trickle down to other VW Group products scheduled to ride on the PPE platform, a list that includes the EV versions of the Cayman and Boxster, as well as the Cayenne. On the Audi side of things, that platform will also underpin the next-gen all-electric versions of the Q5, Q7 and the eventual e-tron GT replacement.

P Is for Performance

VW is already looking ahead, and wants all of its future electric vehicles to share one singular platform, dubbed the Scalable Systems Platform (SSV). Regardless, Porsche will forge on with the PPE platform instead, and then has plans to develop a high-performance variant dubbed SSP, in which the "P" stands for performance.

Trouble In the Ranks?

As far as why this discord is happening, this report points to some disagreements between Porsche boss Oliver Blume and Audi boss Markus Duesmann, who have both reportedly requested that this universal platform offer up some unique differences for each brand that will help differentiate them. Problem is, that also makes the process a bit more expensive. Regardless, for now at least, it seems that we'll be waiting a bit longer for the next-generation of Porsche EVs.
