Speed Up

While electric vehicle sales have grown exponentially in recent months, automakers still have a few major obstacles to overcome before they can convince everyone to make the switch from ICE. One of the biggest sticking points is charging time - it's no secret that it takes far longer to charge an EV than it does to fill up a gas tank. Porsche is among many working on speeding up charge times, and a recent announcement is good news for those that already own an EV from the German automaker.

Rapid Expansion

In Europe, Ionity - a joint venture between a number of automotive manufacturers - owns the largest charging network in the region, with chargers located all along the major highways of that region. The company recently announced that it is expanding yet again, and plans to go from the 400 charging stations it currently employs to 1,000 by 2025, which will give it 7,000 chargers in total.

Universal Standard

Ionity's expansion plan involves moving away from major highways and building more chargers in cities, where they're sorely needed. The company utilizes the Combined Charging System (CCS), which is pretty much universally used by most automakers these days, including Tesla, at least in Europe.

Supercharged Speed

While this expansion is obviously good news for EV owners, the more enticing thing about this expansion plan is that Ionity is also upgrading to 800-volt charging technology. The Porsche Taycan will benefit as it will then be able to utilize its full 270 kW of charging speed, which can take it from a 5 percent state of charge to 80 percent in just 22 minutes.

Standardized Rate

Taycan owners also get standardized pricing when they utilize these chargers in Europe, which is obviously a nice benefit. That rate is currently 0.33 Euros per kilowatt-hour or around 37 cents USD per kilowatt-hour.

Elevated Experience

"We are seeing a clear increase in electromobility and the associated high-performance charging infrastructure," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche. "At Porsche, 50% of the cars delivered worldwide by 2025 are expected to be partially or fully electric - more than 80% by the end of the decade. By investing in the Ionity joint venture, we are sending an important signal to customers that elevates the comfort and convenience of traveling in an electric vehicle even further."

Taking Advantage

This step forward will certainly help make the Taycan even more attractive to Europeans than it already was, and finally takes full advantage of the car's capabilities. But one thing is for certain - this won't be the last advancement in charging technology, which only figures to improve exponentially in the coming years.
