Champion Discussion

With the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 turning 50 years old, the automaker that created this piece of rolling magic has gone out of its way to celebrate that anniversary. Most recently, that included gathering up Walter Röhrl and Timo Bernhard -  the two-time rally world champion and Le Mans winner - to talk about what makes this particular model so darn special.

Pinnace and Final Iteration

"This was my dream car when I was young. I’m proud to be able to drive a car like this today,” Röhrl said. When the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, it represented both the pinnacle and the final iteration, of the first-generation 911 one designed specifically for racing and rallying.

Innovative Solution

“All its innovations meant that the 2.7 was considered a pioneer for the entire automotive industry,” Röhrl explained. It was the first production sports car to have both a front and rear spoiler, while the latter - the now-famous ducktail - enabled the car to have lower drag and a higher top speed as well.

Evolution

The RS moniker has gone on to adorn some similarly amazing cars, as the two racing legends also discussed when bringing up the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0. Its a "wonderful car with perfectly implemented aerodynamic precision," Röhrl said. "With the 4.0, Porsche ensured that the legend endured, even elevating it to new heights,” added Bernhard.

End of an Era

This race-ready GT3 RS 4.0 also marked the end of the 997 generation and was the last car with a Mezger engine. Those aren't the only ones this duo is scoping out up close on this particular day, however.

More Legends

That list also included a 1973 911 Carrera RSR  2.8, the forefather of all RSR models, and its RSR 3.0 successor with its increased displacement, the last and most powerful development stage in the RS series. "Two cars that drove to countless victories and represent cornerstones of the Porsche legend," Röhrl concluded.
