Million Dollars in the Making?

In the wide world of Porsche, there have been many million-dollar cars over the years, ranging from vintage/restomod 911s to rare, special, low-volume builds and of course, legendary race cars. Given some recent results, it would seem as if this 1987 Kremer Porsche 962C will hit that mark when it crosses the block at Gooding & Company's Amelia Island auction next month, too.

Big Bucks Incoming

This particular 962 already sold for more than a million the last time it crossed the auction block in 2019, so given the fact that the market has exploded over the past couple of years, it seems poised to improve on that mark significantly. That's especially true since this car has a decorated racing history, too.

Short Lived

Professionally speaking, in the twilight of its short career, this 962 competed in just two races - the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished fourth overall, and the 1988 Le Mans, where it finished eighth. This particular example was purchased, built, and campaigned by Kremer Racing, features a Thompson-built aluminum honeycomb tub, and was sponsored by Leyton House, a Japanese real estate consortium.

Changing Hands

Chassis number CK6-87 remained with the motorsports outfit until it was eventually sold to UK-based collector Tony O’Neill, who sold it to Henry Pearman in 2002, at which point it became a part of the world's largest collection of Group C cars. Pearman sold the 962C to a collector and dealer named Paul Michaels in 2007, after which the car was mechanically refurbished and made an appearance at the 2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Total Refurbishment

For a number of years, the 962 served as a static display before it was sold at auction back in 2019. The buyer at that time has since had it returned to running and driving condition by Gunnar Racing of West Palm Beach, courtesy of a $41k investment. It has competed in one track day event since that process was complete and looks no worse for wear.

Up for Grabs

Now, this special piece of Porsche motorsports history is once again seeking a new owner, and we have no doubt that it will find one. With loads of documentation and a checkered racing history, this special machine would look right at home in a museum - or, preferably, out on the track at any number of vintage racing events.
