This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

One of the fastest and easiest ways you can customize the 993's look is by updating the headlights. Whether you want to install new LED lights or need to replace the factory models due to wear and age, the good news is it's a simple task that you can perform at home in about twenty minutes.

Materials Needed

  • New headlights
  • Rag
  • Painter's tape (optional)

Step 1 – Remove headlight

Peel back the carpet that lines the wall next to the headlamp. You’ll note that there is a headlamp locking lever positioned near the front of the car. Unclip the lock and rotate the lever 180 degrees. As you do this, the headlamp will begin to protrude from the fender, so make sure you have a hand on it.

Pro Tip

During removal, take care to move the unit up and forward, so as to avoid bumping the unit against the car, which could scratch the paint.

Use a rag to clean area of any dirt/debris build-up.

Step 2 – Install new headlight

Carefully place the new headlight assembly into the car. Again, take care to not bump the unit against the car as it could scratch the paint. Once the headlight is in place, check for gaps and adjust accordingly. Rotate the lever to lock the headlight in place. Wiggle headlight to ensure unit is not loose.

Pro Tip

If you're worried about scratching the finish during removal and installation of your new lights, lay blue painter's tape around the edges of the headlight opening. It will protect the finish, and is easily removed from painted surfaces.

Step 3 – Repeat steps and test

Repeat the steps listed above for the opposite headlight:

  • Peel back carpet
  • Unclip lock
  • Rotate lever
  • Remove headlight assembly
  • Replace headlight assembly
  • Check for gaps
  • Rotate lever and lock in place

Once both lights are in place, turn the car on and make sure to test all lights, including normal headlight state, brights, and turn signals.
