This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to change the tail lights of your Porsche 993. Whether they're damaged, burned out, or you just want to go for a new look, replacing them yourself will save you a lot of money.

Materials Needed

  • Tail lights
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Rag

Step 1 – Remove screws holding light in place

Begin by making sure the car is turned off (with the keys removed from the ignition). Open the rear trunk and locate the three screws by the tail light. Remove screws with Phillips head screwdriver and place in a safe, easy to find location.

Step 2 – Remove lens and light

Gently remove lens — avoid making contact with the bumper cover as you don’t want to damage the tail light.

Once removed, note that the wiring harness needs to be unplugged. You can do this by squeezing the release clip; when the wire releases, the light can be completely disconnected and removed from the vehicle. Clean area of dirt and build-up with a rag as necessary.

Step 3 – Replace light and lens

Plug in the harness of your new taillight and check to make sure that it is fully secure. Now gently slide the light into place; again, make sure to avoid making contact with the bumper cover/quarter panel as you don’t want to damage the light or the car. Check for gaps around the perimeter of the light to ensure proper alignment. Replace screws and tighten about halfway; double check alignment. If everything is in place, tighten screws until snug.

Repeat steps for opposing tail light (if necessary).

Step 4 – Test

You’ll now want to check and see that your new tail lights are operating properly. At this point, you may need another person to assist you. Turn the car on and confirm that the brake lights, running lights, turn signals, and reverse lights are all working properly.
