One Cool Find

With Porsche becoming the collector car maven's brand of choice in recent years, we've seen the prices of rare and notable models skyrocket to lofty new heights. This doesn't just apply to stellar low-mile originals or pristinely restored classics, either - in fact, even cars in less-than-perfect shape are highly desirable in many cases, and there's no cooler example of that than this Porsche 911 964 Carrera RSR Strassenversion that recently crossed the block at Bonham's recent Abu Dhabi sale.

Mysterious Past

With the 911 RSR proving to be a dominant force on the track in the early 1990s, a mere two road-going "Strassenversion" versions became available to the general public, one of which saw extensive use on the road and track. However, the other example - seen here - disappeared into a private collection with just 10 kilometers on the clock, after it took a full three years to be built and delivered given the owner's special order requests.

Unique Combination

The result was a pretty unique combination of Polar Silver Metallic and Guards Red leather, the latter material covering most of the interior, including the seats, headliner, dashboard, steering column, steering wheel, door panels, and roll cage.

Impressive Performer

Performance, as one might imagine for a road-going race car, was quite impressive as well, with the 911 RSR Strassenversion took a mere 3.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is still impressive to this day. However, it's unclear if this one has ever even come close to reaching its limits, given the fact that it essentially hasn't been driven at all since it was built and delivered.

Better Equipped

In fact, this 911 is still wearing its factory-applied Cosmoline protective coating, fitting for a car that hasn't been driven in 30 years. Interestingly, it's better equipped than most stripped-down racers, with a passenger seat and the aforementioned leather goodies, plus a fully-trimmed interior that makes it one of just two with that distinction.

Big Money Sale

That sort of rarity and prominence - coupled with a cool story - clearly caught the attention of collectors, as this special 911 ultimately hammered for $2,127,500, right in the middle of its $2-$2.5 million dollar estimate. And while the new owner would be best served to not drive it at all, we imagine that passing on that rare opportunity will be hard to resist.
